Sponsor: Taiyo Kogyo Corporation
Support: Shinkenchiku-sha Co.,Ltd.
Planning: Architectural Communication Consultants

The Membrane Design Competition, celebrating its 16th anniversary this year, is a global competition for the design of membrane structures. Since last year, this competition has adopted a two-stage screening system with digital presentations. At the preliminary screening stage this year, entries (in HTML) and summaries (with a single graphic and text for each work) were accepted only through our Web site on the Internet. The application period closed on August 20, and we received 73 entries from all over the world. All entries were introduced on the Taiyo Kogyo Web site and examined at the preliminary screening, and seven entries passed the preliminary screening. In addition, five entries were selected for excellence although they did not pass the screening. The final screening was done in public at the Tokyo International Forum, Hall D, on October 13. At the final screening, digital presentations of the seven entries were given with further developments. Each prize was determined in public by the jury. A commendation ceremony and a friendship party were held successively.
