14th Membrane Design Competition'99
Guideline

On September 09, we closed our list of applicants for the 14th Membrane Design Competition.Winners will be announced on November 1999.

THEME

Shoreline Membranes

The shoreline is a good place for lightweight designs.
Lakes and oceans sometimes show a face as smooth as a mirror, but then the@wind starts to blow and waves begin to rise. Rivers start out quietly, with pure water filtering into little creeks. The creeks flow into rushing streams, and the streams come together into majestic floods that roll into the ocean. Water flows from high to low. It may be agitated on the surface, but the depths are a world of languid movement. This is an expression of the laws of nature. By way of comparison, membranes have zero resistance to compression. Together with the supporting materials that deal with compression, membranes take form according to the laws of tension. Unlike conventional fixed structures, they are flexible and change their shape according to changes in wind patterns and variations in the supporting materials. This ingenuous response to natural dynamics has something in common with the behavior of water. In this competition, we would like to see entries that illustrate this kind of relation to water
The shoreline could be an ocean, a lake, or a river. It could also be an oasis in a desert. Membranes could be used in various types of facilities on the urban waterfront. They could lend interest to a landscape of warehouses on the shore. Other applications could include zestful surprises in shoreline leisure facilities, or original shapes that heighten the sense of anticipation on piers where passenger ships depart for trips to faraway places. Membranes could function as symbolic landmarks in picnic grounds by lakes or oceans, or as sites for refreshment in desert oases.@20@Entrants are free to imagine any type of shoreline and any type of membrane. The installed facility should serve its intended purpose and also contribute to enhancing the environment through its appearance and landscape design.
We look forward to proposals for shoreline membranes that give full expression to the functional and aesthetic potentials of the material.
