Completed a large-roofed shelter in front of Atago Station that resembles the sails of a Takase-bune.

Projection mapping by Noda City to create a lively atmosphere in front of the station

Taiyo Kogyo Corporation (Tokyo headquarters: Setagaya-ku, Tokyo; Osaka headquarters: Yodogawa-ku, Osaka; President: Yumi Nomura), a company involved in large-scale membrane structures (tent structures) and civil engineering and logistics materials, has received an order to install a membrane structure for a large roof shelter resembling the sails of a Takase-bune, a large boat, at Atago Station (Nakanodai, Noda City, Chiba Prefecture) on Tobu Railway’s Urban Park Line. The project was recently completed. The new roof shelter was constructed in conjunction with the improvement of the plaza in front of Atago Station’s west exit. At night, beautiful projection mapping is projected onto the shelter, making it a new icon and adding to the liveliness of the area in front of the station.

The new station building, to be completed in 2021, will be designed in the motif of a Takase-bune, with its exterior and interior decorated in the shape of a ship’s bottom and sails. A large-roofed shelter was also installed at the newly developed west exit plaza as an icon of the station, inspired by the Takase-bune. The gently curved membrane roof is reminiscent of the sails of a Takase-bune. The gently curving membrane roof is covered with seasonal and colorful projection mapping images from 19:00 to 22:00 daily to create a lively atmosphere in the town.

Stations serve not only as transportation hubs, but also as hubs that connect the city and its people, and people and their communities, performing a variety of functions. The installation of a large roof shelter with a membrane structure, such as the one at Atago Station, not only shelters passengers from the wind and rain, but also enhances convenience and comfort for passengers and creates a lively atmosphere at the station and in the town. Taiyo Kogyo will continue to actively propose the creation of station icons that take advantage of the translucent, lightweight, and soft characteristics of membrane materials.

Comment from the person in charge of the Urban Department, Construction Bureau, Noda City Hall

In designing the station plaza, it was decided that the boarding shed should resemble the overhanging sails of a Takase-bune, which is the concept of the new station building. The placement of this large roof over the front of the station created a large, plain canvas-like space in the center of the plaza. The station building has been newly renovated, and as part of the development of the city and the creation of a familiar space and liveliness that is close to the lives of the citizens as the seasons change, we adopted a year-round projector projection of light. We will continue to study ways to utilize the large space in front of the station square so that it will not only be a transportation hub as a station, but also a hub for local people’s daily lives and disaster prevention.
