Cooperation with Minami Uonuma City Hall for verification of snow removal utilization with multilayer membrane sheets for outdoor snow storage

Hot summer! Cooling system using preserved snow piles in operation.

Taiyo Kogyo Corporation (Tokyo Head Office: Setagaya-ku, Tokyo; Osaka Head Office: Yodogawa-ku, Osaka; President: Yumi Nomura), a company involved in large-scale membrane structures (tent structures) and civil engineering and logistics materials, has been cooperating with Minamiuonuma City Hall (Niigata Prefecture) since this spring in a demonstration experiment of a cooling system using snow removal From May 12, The snow cooling facility using snow piles stored outdoors has been in operation and has been effective in reducing electricity consumption at the Minamiuonuma City Hall.

On April 25, Minamiuonuma City Hall covered a snow pile of about 450 tons (top 8m x 8m bottom 15 x 15m height 7m) with outdoor snow storage sheets. The snow pile will be stored until September, and a demonstration experiment is underway to use this snow to reduce temperatures inside City Hall. For the sheets, Taiyo Kogyo used “multilayer membrane sheets for outdoor snow storage,” which were newly developed based on advice and technical guidance from SnowBiz Corporation (Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture; President: Chikatomi Ito), a specialist in snow utilization, and which have both high insulation effect and waterproof properties. The product is the result of our many years of knowledge and experience in thermal insulation membrane materials, as well as our membrane processing technology. We combined multiple membrane materials, including aluminum foil sheets, and devised our own processing method. A drone survey as of June 25th confirmed that 55% of the outdoor snow covered with this multilayer membrane sheet remained in place.

Taiyo Kogyo anticipates that under the circumstances where global warming is causing summer temperatures to rise and the number of extremely hot days to increase, the need for preservation of snow piles will increase, including the use of snow removal for snow cooling facilities, storage of supplies, and use of snow for events and facilities. We plan to apply for a utility model based on this case study and call for its use in other regions.
