Seminar on “Safety and Handling of Flexible Containers” and “Logistics Recycling System” held at Yawata Plant of Krosaki Harima Corporation

2025.02.04

Taiyo Kogyo entered the logistics business in the 1960s with the development of the flexible container bag “Ticon” by applying processing technology for membrane materials.

Taiyo Kogyo has achieved transportation rationalization through the transportation of powder and granular materials such as synthetic resins, chemicals, foods, and fertilizers in large-lot transportation instead of the conventional small-lot transportation.

As a leading company in the industry, we not only manufacture container bags, but also aim to provide proposals and support to meet the challenges of our customers.

In particular, in recent years, we have been promoting new initiatives to address environmental issues such as ESG investment and SDGs, which are difficult for customers to solve on their own, and safety measures at work sites.

We have been promoting new initiatives by utilizing our experience and know-how cultivated over many years.

This time, we held a seminar on “Safety and Handling of Flexible Containers” and “Logistics Recycling System” at the Yawata Plant of Kurosaki Harima Corporation, which uses our running flexible container bags.

We asked Mr. Haraguchi, Plant Manager of Yawata Irregular Shape Plant, Irregular Shape Manufacturing Division, Refractory Manufacturing Group, Krosaki Harima Corporation, who attended the seminar, about his impression of the seminar.

About Flexible Container Bags TAICON

Taiyo Kogyo handles three types of flexible container bags: running type 1, running type 2, and cross.

Standards for flexible containers and the strength and performance of their materials

This container bag meets the requirements of the Japanese Industrial Standard JIS and is recognized as a JIS-compliant product with formal registration with the Japan Flexible Container Manufacturers Association (JFC).

*Flexible containers for non-hazardous materials, registered to JIS Z 1651 (2017)

Seminar on Safety and Handling of Flexible Containers

Running Type 1 and Running Type 2 are container bags that are not disposable, but are designed to be used repeatedly through cleaning and maintenance.

The Taiyo Kogyo Group maintains bags with nationally uniform work standards and quality through a nationwide network of subsidiaries that perform container services.

Bags collected from users are checked for condition, cleaned, repaired if necessary, and returned to the manufacturer.

We also conduct periodic aging tests to inspect the degree of aging of our customers’ bags in our own factory.

We offer this service at the “Flexible Container Safety and Handling Seminar” to ensure the safe use of container bags for a longer period of time, based on our experience in cleaning and maintaining more than 2 million bags per year.

Safety and Handling of Flexible Containers Seminar" Contents

The seminar will introduce the basic contents of inspection and repair for which standards have been issued by the Japan Flexible Container Manufacturers Association (JFC), as well as actual accidents and damage verification experiments using videos.

The seminar is designed to improve the safety and knowledge of participating employees and workers on the job site.

Introducing a logistics recycling system with low environmental impact

The collected items that are determined to require disposal are recycled and used repeatedly as new running flexible container bags.

Running flexible container bags can be used multiple times, significantly reducing environmental impact compared to disposable cross-type bags.

In conjunction with the aforementioned safety seminars, we can also offer suggestions on how to address environmental issues that are difficult for customers to resolve on their own.

We interviewed Mr. Haraguchi, plant manager of the Yawata Monolithic Plant, Monolithic Manufacturing Division, Refractory Manufacturing Group, Krosaki Harima Corporation, who actually attended the seminar.

Why did you ask Taiyo Kogyo to hold a safety seminar?

We attended Taiyo Kogyo’s safety seminar at the “Refractory Raw Materials Study Group” hosted by the Refractory Material Technology Association, and we were very interested in having the seminar held at our company as well, so we made an offer.

We wanted to make the employees who use flexible container bags aware of the dangers of these bags through explanations, including video clips, of the conditions under which they can fall over, how much gravity is applied to the bags, and under what conditions they can tear. We wanted to make sure that employees using flexible container bags were aware of the dangers.

Logistics Recycling Systems, together with another department, the Environmental and Disaster Prevention Promotion Department, was considering the possibility of recycling flexible containers.

Currently, the company conducts its own inspections and disposes of unnecessary items as industrial waste. However, in addition to the fact that bags with powder on them are not suitable for recycling, our own factory alone had little knowledge about recycling flexible containers, and we were wondering how to consider recycling them.

We asked Taiyo Kogyo, which specializes in this field, to provide us with information and knowledge on recycling.

What we felt were the challenges

The flexible container bag cleaning process relies heavily on workers, and the dust and fumes that are generated in the environment make it an extremely burdensome work environment.

In addition, it is sometimes difficult to secure personnel for such an environment, and we were concerned about the future of cleaning operations.

On the other hand, container bags used for the raw materials we purchase are disposable and are sometimes disposed of, so we needed to reduce the amount of these bags generated.

From the perspective of the SDGs, it is important to reduce the amount of waste container bags generated in order to reduce CO2 emissions.

Through this seminar, we were able to establish a relationship with Taiyo Kogyo and learned about the current status of their recycling system, which has further helped us to consider solutions to environmental issues and the labor environment. We are very grateful for this.

Thoughts on this seminar

Regarding safety, we were able to learn how to properly handle container bags by reviewing videos of the environment in which container bags are used and past examples of dangerous cases.

We sincerely appreciate the seminar, as learning how to use container bags safely from a specialist will greatly improve our sensitivity to danger and our safety awareness.

We will continue to make use of the contents of this seminar in our safety activities in order to raise the safety awareness of our employees.

The content of the seminar was also very helpful in considering the environmental impact of the logistics recycling system, such as improving production efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions.

We will definitely link this to our future activities.

Finally, more than 65 members of our company were able to listen to the seminar both in person and via the web.

Thank you very much for this opportunity. Thank you very much.

Thank you, Plant Manager Haraguchi.
