Light, soft and safe wood-grained membrane ceiling
October 4, 2022
Taiyo Kogyo Corporation
(Tokyo headquarters: Setagaya-ku, Tokyo; Osaka headquarters: Yodogawa-ku, Osaka; President: Yumi Nomura; hereafter “Taiyo Kogyo”), a company involved in large-scale membrane structures (tent structures) and civil engineering and logistics materials, has installed a wood-grained, high-design membrane ceiling “ArchiCanvas” at Sousei Hall (91 Minami-Furuta, Kitajima-cho, Itano-gun, Tokushima) in Tokushima Prefecture, and completed construction in December 2021. ArchiCanvas” is a new ceiling membrane that can be actively used for ceilings that require high design quality by removing the stereotype of “membrane material = white color.
Membrane ceilings draw attention due to successive ceiling falls
With a number of accidents involving falling ceilings being reported one after another, attention has been focused on improving the earthquake resistance of non-structural components such as ceiling materials. With a mass of approximately 600g/m2, the membrane material is extremely lightweight compared to conventional ceiling materials. The flexible membrane material not only enhances the interior design, but also reduces the risk of ceiling fallout by enabling it to follow the deformation caused by large shaking in the event of an earthquake. Although the material is only 1 mm thick, it is strong enough to catch falling objects. These advantages have led to the active use of membrane ceilings in the renewal and construction of school facilities, gymnasiums, indoor swimming pools, and other facilities.

Developed a wood-grain membrane ceiling
As the introduction of membrane ceilings continues to grow, there is an increasing need for membrane ceilings with a higher level of design than ever before. In particular, spaces with wood structures and a woody feel are attracting attention, and Taiyo Kogyo has received noncombustible certification for wood-grain membrane materials printed using two types of printing methods: an inkjet printing method with a high degree of design freedom and a standard wood-grain printing method with a low unit cost, and has been promoting their introduction as “Archi Canvas” since 2019. The “ArchiCanvas” is a new product line of wood-grain printing. This time, as the first example of wood-grain printing, the gravure printing method “ArchiCanvas” was adopted as the ceiling material for the upper part in front of the stage of Sousei Hall in Kitajima Town, Tokushima Prefecture.
