The industry’s first “ice-temperature controlled transportation” to maintain freshness!

Transport perishable products in a temperature-controlled environment and deliver them promptly in a "ready-to-eat" condition

Cool Cargo, ” recently certified by the Ice Tempering® Association (President Akihiko Yamane) as “ice tempering equipment,” is a portable cold storage unit currently being marketed as a low-temperature distribution management material. This is the first certification in the ice-temperature industry for equipment that performs the “tempering” process, in which perishable products in an ice-temperature condition are gently tempered in a temperature-controlled environment of approximately 3°C*1 to make them ready to eat, during the transportation process.

Cool Cargo is a “rigid insulation box” that combines rigid polystyrene foam and aluminum vapor-deposited film, and is fitted with a compact, power-saving, and environmentally friendly “Stirling Cooling Unit. Since its launch in 2005, it has been highly acclaimed for its light weight, easy handling, and more economical than ordinary cold storage and refrigerated vehicles. In addition to a household power supply (100 V), it can also be powered by a 12 V battery, making it suitable for a wide range of uses. The newly certified model is a 350-liter large-capacity type (product dimensions: 850 mm (W) x 650 mm (D) x 1,700 mm (H); weight: 70 kg; price: 405,000 yen *including freight and excluding tax), which can be integrated with a cart to transport and store a large volume of perishable products.

In addition, upon the certification of COOL CARGO as an ice-temperature equipment (date of certification: September 11), the Ice-temperature® Association of Japan commented, “In addition to being positioned as ice-temperature-related transportation equipment for tempering, it can also be used in combination with gel ice*2 to enable ice-temperature transportation at product temperatures below 0℃. It is also possible to use it in the ice storage and activate the Stirling Cooler at the time of departure from the vehicle, thus expanding its application.

Ice temperature is a technology that preserves freshness and brings out aged taste by maintaining a slight temperature range (ice temperature range) from below 0°C to the freezing point*3 where perishable products begin to freeze.
Taiyo Kogyo hopes to contribute to the further spread of ice-cooled products and the creation of an environment in which fresh food can be delivered to consumers by introducing the concept of “ice-cooled controlled transportation” in the cold chain field, which is neither frozen nor refrigerated, but a third temperature range through the certification of Cool Cargo ice-cooled equipment.

*1: Cooling performance figures are based on ambient temperatures of 28°C or lower. (This is not a guaranteed value.)
*2: Individual ice cubes are fine spheres with a diameter of 0.1 to 0.5 mm and a temperature of -1°C to -2°C. This sherbet-like ice is made with the latest technology and maintains an ice-temperature range.
*3: Freezing point varies depending on the perishable product. (For fish, the freezing point is approximately -2°C.)

More about Cool Cargo

Details of the COOL CARGO 350, which has been certified as an “ice warming device,” are as follows.

About Cool Cargo.
COOL CARGO is a cold storage container jointly developed and launched by Taiyo Kogyo Corporation and Twinbird Industries, Ltd. (Head office: Tsubame City, Niigata Prefecture; President: Shigeaki Nomizu) in 2005. The “rigid insulation box” is a combination of rigid foamed polystyrene and aluminum vapor-deposited film, and is fitted with a compact, power-saving, and environmentally friendly “Stirling Cooling Unit. It enables refrigerated/frozen transportation and storage without the use of specialized refrigeration vehicles, dry ice, or cold storage materials, which are indispensable in conventional cold chain (low-temperature distribution).
