(Tokyo headquarters: Setagaya-ku, Tokyo; Osaka headquarters: Yodogawa-ku, Osaka; President: Yumi Nomura; hereafter “Taiyo Kogyo”), which is engaged in large-scale membrane surface structures (tent structures) and civil engineering and logistics materials, has received the “Environmental Contribution Award” from the Japan Membrane Structures Association (Chuo-ku, Tokyo) for its environment-friendly “next-generation chimney” utilizing membrane materials. The award ceremony was held on Monday, June 23, 2025, and Canadevia Corporation (Head Office: Suminoe-ku, Osaka; President and CEO: Michi Kuwahara), which jointly developed this technology, and Taiyo Kogyo employees received the award.

The Japan Membrane Structures Association is dedicated to the sound development of membrane structures through research and surveys, development of technical standards, human resource development, and information dissemination, with the aim of improving and promoting the technology of membrane construction. The association recognizes outstanding designs that take advantage of the characteristics of membrane materials and membrane structures, as well as their technical and environmental contributions, and presents awards annually (starting in 2024) in three categories: “Membrane Structure Design Award,” “Technology Award,” and “Environmental Contribution Award.

The “Next Generation Chimney,” which received the “Environmental Contribution Award” this year, is a chimney with high workability and earthquake resistance, taking advantage of the characteristics of membrane materials. It is an innovative structure that replaces the exterior concrete and PC panels conventionally used for chimneys of waste incineration facilities with the lightweight and highly durable “PTFE glass fiber membrane material,” which also contributes to reducing environmental impact.

Evaluation by Ms. Junko Koga, Award Committee member (excerpt)

  • The membrane material used for the outer skin is highly antifouling due to the photocatalytic treatment, and the frequency of maintenance of the outer skin can be expected to be lower than when the outer wall is composed of other building materials. Furthermore, the mass of the exterior wall is smaller than that of other building materials, making it superior in terms of earthquake resistance. In addition, reduction of environmental load is desired in many other aspects, such as reduction of resource consumption, reduction of CO2 emission by shortening the construction method, and NOx absorption effect by photocatalytic processing.
  • The use of membrane materials in the chimney envelope, a new area that has revolutionized the conventional concept of using membrane materials, is expected to further expand the use of membrane materials in the future.
  • It is believed that this material can be used not only in chimneys, but also in new situations. The possibility of expanding the use of membrane materials for building and structural envelopes is also highly appreciated.
