Membrane Roof Completed for Walkway Renovation at Omura City Motorboat Race Course

The white exterior, which blends with the existing structure, ensures comfort and visual continuity with the surrounding landscape.

Taiyo Kogyo Co., Ltd. (Tokyo Headquarters: Setagaya-ku, Tokyo;Osaka Headquarters: Yodogawa Ward, Osaka City; President and CEO: Yuki Nomura), a company specializing in large-scale membrane structures (tent structures) as well as civil engineering and logistics materials, was responsible for the membrane construction work on the new walkway canopy at the Omura City Motorboat Racecourse/BOAT RACE Omura (Omura City, Nagasaki Prefecture). As this facility connects to an adjacent walkway canopy that the company had previously constructed, membrane materials were adopted to ensure design continuity.

The Omura City Motorboat Race Course is known as the “birthplace of motorboat racing,” where the first official motorboat races in Japan were held, and is located at the southernmost and westernmost points of Japan. The newly constructed walkway canopy covers the pedestrian path leading to the parking lot on the east side of the facility, protecting visitors from rain, wind, and direct sunlight while ensuring a comfortable and safe route.

The white membrane roof has a high solar reflectance of 75% or more, significantly reducing harsh direct sunlight and harmful ultraviolet rays. Thanks to the membrane’s high light transmittance, it creates a bright, airy space filled with natural light and offers a flexible, light feel not found in other building materials.Furthermore, thanks to the performance of the titanium dioxide photocatalyst*1 used in the surface treatment, organic contaminants are broken down and washed away by rainwater, ensuring excellent stain resistance that preserves the white exterior for the long term.

*1 Titanium dioxide photocatalyst: This material absorbs sunlight (ultraviolet rays) and oxidizes and breaks down organic matter. When sunlight strikes the titanium dioxide photocatalyst membrane, it breaks down organic contaminants. In addition, titanium dioxide photocatalysts have hydrophilic properties, causing water droplets to spread out horizontally and form a water film. As a result, rainwater seeps between the surface of the membrane material and the dirt, causing the dirt to lift off, and the rain washes it away.

In recent years, boat race tracks have undergone renovations and upgrades aimed at attracting families and younger generations. As part of these efforts to provide comfortable facilities, a membrane roof was installed to create a space with an airy feel.

About Taiyo Kogyo Corporation

Taiyo Kogyo is a leading company in the field of large-scale membrane structures, with a history spanning over 100 years. At the 1970 Japan World Exposition, the company achieved the world’s first low-rise (height-restricted) pneumatic membrane structure—one that supported the roof using only air pressure—for the U.S. Pavilion.Since then, the company has participated in large-scale projects around the world, including the installation of the membrane roof at the Tokyo Dome and the Millennium Dome in London (now known as The O2 Arena), one of the world’s largest dome structures. Furthermore, for the 2025 Osaka-Kansai World Expo, the company was involved in the construction of more than 20 pavilions and facilities, supporting the creation of the Expo site.
With membrane structure technology—which excels in cost-effectiveness, constructability, light transmission, and design—at its core, the company has expanded its operations from the construction sector into civil engineering, logistics, and environmental fields, thereby supporting safety and peace of mind in society.
Together with our group companies—including TSP Taiyo Co., Ltd., which specializes in event consulting, and Actio Co., Ltd., which manages facility operations—we are committed to providing new value to society under the motto, “Making the world gentler. Making the future warmer.”
